Farm & Home: Sourdough & Apple Butter – Baking & Preserving with Sugarhouse Workshop at Wing & A Prayer Farm

Join us for a day of baking and canning in the Wing & A Prayer Farm kitchen with Jessica Lewis Stevens of Sugarhouse Workshop and Tammy White of Wing & A Prayer Farm.
From 10 – 3:00 on Sunday, September 10, we’ll be using homegrown wild yeast, learn to bake wholesome, rustic loaves of sourdough bread in your own home kitchen. Learn how to tend a sourdough starter, choose your tools and ingredients, and develop the skills you need to foster a bread baking practice. No prior bread making skills necessary, this workshop will prepare you with the knowledge, recipes, resources, and starter culture you need to begin baking your own sourdough at home. We will also learn various ways to incorporate your extra starter into every day foods like crackers, pie crust, and pancakes to make them more nutritious, and more delicious.

Every workshop participant will leave with wildcrafted sourdough starter from Jessica’s kitchen, recipes, and a full belly!

An avid home baker, Jessica is the author of two volumes of the handmade cookbook Sugar House, and her recipes have been published in magazines such as Taproot and Making. She bakes, dyes with plants, and creates bespoke quilts alongside her two small sons in southern Vermont. Read more about Jessica and her work at
While ferments are bubbling and bread is rising, we’ll simultaneously turn the no-spray, heirloom apples from our backyard trees into spicy, sweet butter with Tammy teaching old fashioned mason jar canning to preserve the goodness for winter.  Through a step-by-step demo, you’ll walk through stages of the homestead art of putting up today’s harvest for tomorrow’s homegrown meals.  We’ll answer questions ranging from supplies and how to come by them inexpensively, sterilization of equipment and processing as well as share a tried and true family recipe.  Everyone will go home with a jar of preserves to use in recipes or to snack on with that luscious bread!
