Farm & Home Series: Pie Baking & Cold-Processed Soap

Join us for our Farm & Home Series Workshops in which we share homesteading arts out of our farm kitchen. On Saturday, November 2, we’ll start at 10 a.m. with scratch pie-baking using traditional recipes and local ingredients. You’ll go home with a freshly baked pie and the itch to make more. Class ends at 1 p.m.. Cost of Pie Workshop is $95, materials included.

On Sunday, November 3, we’ll start at 10 a.m. to make cold-processed soap together in the farm kitchen and, weather provided, on the porch. By using farm-raised flowers and herbs and farm-harvested tallows, we’ll create an all natural loaf of soap which you’ll be able to take home and cut after it has cured. Once you’ve used a farm-made bar of soap, you’ll never want to go back. They are super emollient and natural and mild, yet bubbly and cleansing as necessary. Cost of Soap Workshop is $95, materials included.

To register, send an email to hello@wingandaprayerfarm.com - “Pie Baking” or “Cold-Processed Soap” in subject line. We’ll be in touch asap to send a registration form and answer questions.

Maker Market & Open Farm at Wing & A Prayer Farm

We're so excited for the Open Farm and Taproot Maker Market here on August 31 from 10 - 1. There is free parking in the field and we recommend comfortable, closed toe footwear for walking the farm and touring, observing Natural Dye demos outside the dye garden, being introduced to the animals and shopping our local Farmers' Market and Taproot Magazine's Maker Market in the barn.

Being a production fiber farm means it is not always easy to find time to share with the public, but there is nothing we love being able to do more than introduce our fiber stars to you, their adoring fans. Get your cameras ready, bring your baskets to fill in the marketplace, bring a blanket and a picnic if you like! A local food cart will be here, too, for purchasing delicious, homemade snacks such as crepes or popsicles and we'll have pies for sale in our Farmers' Market, along with other local farm's produce, syrup, honey, dairy and meats.

Boston, MA: Natural Dye Workshop with New England Farm to Fiber & The Trustees of Reservations

At Boston Public Market’s “The KITCHEN”, co-sponsored by New England Farm to Fiber and The Trustees, enhance your appreciation for the natural world with a day of dyeing Wing & A Prayer Farm yarns using foraged and found materials for luminescent, beautiful color. Through demo, discussion, and a hands-on approach, Tammy from Wing & Prayer Farm will lead you on journey of exploring the world of natural color.

In this workshop, you will learn how to derive color from a variety of materials such as petals, berries, cones, found objects from the field, forest and your very own kitchen. You will learn how to prepare your fibers for dyeing using simple mordants that can be collected from the garden or the woodland floor, and about overdyes and modifiers to alter your colors to produce lasting, naturally beautiful yarn. Local resources are the heart of Tammy’s natural dyeing stock but, additionally, she sources through a variety of methods to obtain colors as sustainably as possible.

Sign-ups are through Eventbrite with New England Farm to Fiber.

Farm & Home Series: Indigo Dyeing & Ecoprinting Workshop at Wing & A Prayer Farm

Farmer Tammy will lead the workshops at this weekend event in July on the farm. There’ll be 2 sessions to choose from. Tammy will teach Indigo Dyeing on Saturday from 9 - noon and Ecoprinting & Bundle Dyeing using forage from the Dye Garden from 2 - 5:00.

Saturday, July 13, 9 - noon: During the Indigo Dyeing Workshop, we’ll harvest from the Indigo in our Dye Garden to teach you how to make an Indigo vat for fresh and fermented color extraction. A range of blues and greens can be created by adjusting ingredients and modifiers and techniques from this singular plant. We’ll take time to tour the Dye Garden on the farm and no prior knowledge of Natural Dyeing is necessary. This workshop is appropriate for all levels of experience and interest. We will dye protein and cellulose fibers and you will go home with a project’s worth of Wing & A Prayer Farm wool & fabric samples.

Saturday, July 13, 2 - 5:00: The Ecoprinting/Bundle Dyeing Workshop will focus on extracting color and print through hapazome(pounding) and bundle dyeing. We’ll use forage and found materials and experiment with different methods of transfer color and design naturally onto swatches and samples of silk and cotton fabrics.

As always, connections to kindness & sustainability in the natural world will be the foundation of our farms’ offerings, reinforcing how we can connect art and health in our everyday living, taking care to avoid insulting our earth.

Saturday’s break from noon to 2:00 allows for participants to bring a picnic lunch and relax at the farm, or to skip out to local markets and eateries if desired. A Farm Tour will be included during this window for interested visitors.

Classes are each $65 and include materials.
